I have wonderful memories of Coach Stejskal at Wilson High School. I’m thankful I had the opportunity to know him and to be one of his students. I remember his kindness and I’ll always remember the impact of learning about the Holocaust in his class. Praying for comfort and peace for his family and friends.

Coach Stejskal was an excellent teacher and a great person. I took a history class he taught at Wilson when I was in junior high school. I learned all about the holocaust in his class.
One time he told us that he had listened to the song “Walking In Memphis” with his dog all summer! He had a great sense of humor and he was very intelligent.
My thoughts are with his family, friends, and all of those who were positively impacted by him. May he rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Leann Black

So sorry for your loss. The whole northwest area has lost a person who cared about any and all that he met. An educator who taught life and values of being all that you could accomplish. Always had a smile and a story to share. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Jim Shirley

It is hard to put my reaction to this news into words because I am deeply saddened by it but also have joy because of the life he lived. He finished well. Our communities need more faithful men of God like him.
I have too many fond memories to list but some of the best are the questions he would ask and all the stories he would tell as we were stacked up four deep in the back seat of his of his two-door car on the way up to Waynesboro during the summer for tournaments. I am not sure if prepared them in advance, but he kept us laughing and entertained the whole ride up and back each day. It is not my story to tell but I also saw him stand up for people in critical moments, speaking truth and encouragement as others have noted. I am just glad I had the chance to reach out a while back and thank him. Not surprisingly I got a thoughtful letter back. He was a great coach and even better man. I look forward to seeing him again.

Thank you for your kindness while at Lexington. I still tell the stories of how you brought beautiful roses in and gave them to students and staff. Long ago, one of your roses made my mom's day when I brought it home for her. You will be missed. -JR

I must say I was very saddened and heartbroken when my brother Roderick Sheppard gave me the news. Many will never know the vision and love Coach Stejskal provided. I was a minority in a huge school which could have a challenge. If I had any problems Coach had a large paddle in top drawer. If anyone tried to bully me or make me feel unwelcome. Coach had my back. These large life lessons are still with me now in life. To put things short and simple my education was heading off into destruction. When I repeated 7th grade he grabbed me one day and told me. I was gonna successful why argue with two towering giants Coach and Matt Bohon. The extra time provided was genuine. Each morning I raced to watch sports center in their rooms before school. So many stories of mentoring. It became a time I was willing to do anything for him and trust me it went both ways. I spiraled out and decided to no longer play high football. Who picked up pieces told me to learn humility and I became water boy, towel boy, and swept the gym floor just not on game night. He got me across the finish line even got me an athletic scholarship. Which he kept a secret until Billy Valentine announced at graduation. In closing if Coach told anyone he would help them. Then I know you have better stories than mine. If you look at the photo I posted. It’s a letter we wrote each other during heart of Covid-19 2020. It’s posted on my office wall. I am always looking for motivation. If could use many scriptures to provide comfort. Revelation 21:4 always feels to good have no more suffering.
Stejskal family from my heart of Quintus Sheppard thanks for sharing.

It is with profound sorrow that we bid farewell to an esteemed mentor and coach, Jay. His compassionate spirit left indelible marks in our hearts as he continuously imparted wisdom and inspiration. His selfless dedication to fostering growth was not just felt within the walls of Wilson High School but beyond them too. We remember him not only as a kind educator but also as a delightful beacon of thoughtfulness. May his soul find eternal tranquillity.

With a heavy heart, we lament the loss of Coach Jay, an embodiment of humor, charm and intellect. His sparkling kindness was like a beacon in our school days; his selfless nature and instructional acumen forever imprinted in our memories. Be it mundane weather chatters or intricacies of academic pursuit, He always lent an attentive ear. Our seventh-grade homeroom feels the void that is irreplaceable. His memory will continue to mentor us subtly from beyond the veils.
